[00:02:14] he drags me out on the dance floor|and we're dancing close and slow [00:02:19] now he's got a woman at home [00:02:21] he's got another woman down the hall|and he seems to want me anyway [00:02:26] Why d'you have to get so drunk|and lead me on that way? [00:02:30] You just picked up a hitcher [00:02:33] A prisoner of the white lines|on the freeway [00:02:47] l looked a coyote right in the face [00:02:50] on the road to baljennie,|near my old home town [00:02:53] he went running through|the whisker wheat [00:02:56] chasing some prize down [00:02:59] And a hawk was playing with him [00:03:01] coyote was jumping straight up|and making passes [00:03:05] he had those same eyes, just like yours [00:03:08] under your dark glasses [00:03:10] privately probing the public rooms [00:03:12] And peeking through keyholes|in numbered doors [00:03:16] Where the players lick their wounds|and take their temporary lovers [00:03:21] And their pills and powders|to get them through this passion play [00:03:25] no regrets, coyote [00:03:28] l just get off up aways [00:03:30] You just picked up a hitcher [00:03:32] A prisoner of the white lines|on the freeway [00:03:47] coyote's in the coffee shop [00:03:49] he's staring a hole|in his scrambled eggs [00:03:52] he picks up my scent on his fingers|while he's watching the waitresses' legs [00:03:57] he's too far from the bay of fundy [00:04:00] from Appaloosas and eagles and tides [00:04:04] And the air-conditioned cubicles [00:04:07] And the carbon ribbon rides|are spelling it out so clear [00:04:11] either he's gonna|have to stand and fight [00:04:14] or take off out of here [00:04:17] l've tried to run away myself [00:04:20] to run away and wrestle with my ego [00:04:26] And with this flame|you put here in this eskimo [00:04:31] ln this hitcher [00:04:34] ln this prisoner [00:04:36] of the fine white lines [00:04:39] of the white lines [00:04:42] on the free freeway [00:05:14] (cheering) [00:05:20] levon's home town,|it's near West helena. [00:05:25] one time we were there,|for some reason or another, [00:05:28] and we decided we were gonna look up|one of the legends of that town, [00:05:32] which was sonny boy Williamson. [00:05:34] ln my opinion, he's the best harp player, [00:05:37] that's like harmonica, [00:05:40] blues harmonica, that l've ever heard. [00:05:44] he's the big Daddy of 'em. [00:05:47] And he took us to a friend of his,|a woman's place, [00:05:51] who served food and corn liquor. [00:05:55] ln a southern booze can. [00:05:58] he would sit there|and he was playing for us. [00:06:00] And we were getting drunk|and trying to figure out where we were. [00:06:04] he was spitting in a can.|l thought he was dipping snuff. [00:06:07] l thought he had something in his lip. [00:06:09] And he kept spitting in this can and|playing, and we kept getting drunker. [00:06:14] finally, l looked over in the can|and l realised it was blood. [00:06:18] he was getting pretty tired|and pretty drunk by then. [00:06:21] And we made big plans for the future|and all kinds of things we were gonna do. [00:06:25] And it was tremendous. A great night. [00:06:29] A couple of months later, we got a letter|from his manager, or whoever it was, [00:06:34] saying that he had passed away. [00:06:37] ( ''mystery train'') [00:06:54] train arrive [00:06:59] 16 coaches long [00:07:05] train arrive, yeah [00:07:10] 16 coaches long [00:07:16] Well, that long, black train|took my baby and gone [00:07:24] train, train [00:07:29] rolling round the bend [00:07:35] train, train [00:07:40] rolling round the bend [00:07:46] Well, it took my baby|away from me again [00:07:55] heard that whistle blowing,|it was the middle of the night [00:07:59] When l got down to the station|the train was pulling out of sight [00:08:03] mystery train [00:08:08] rolling round the bend [00:08:14] mystery train [00:08:19] rolling round the bend [00:08:24] Well, it took my baby [00:08:27] Away from me again [00:09:17] (cheering) [00:09:24] (robertson) paul butterfield. [00:09:31] near memphis, [00:09:34] cotton country, rice country, [00:09:37] the most interesting thing|is probably the music. [00:09:41] (scorsese)|levon, who came from around there? [00:09:44] carl perkins. [00:09:48] muddy Waters, the king of country music. [00:09:52] (robertson) elvis presley. [00:09:54] johnny cash. bo Diddley. [00:09:57] that's kind of the middle|of the country back there. [00:10:00] so bluegrass or country music, [00:10:05] you know, if it comes down to that area [00:10:08] and if it mixes there with rhythm|and if it dances, [00:10:11] then you've got a combination|of all those different kinds of music. [00:10:16] country, bluegrass, blues music. [00:10:19] - (robertson) the melting pot.|- show music. [00:10:22] - (scorsese) And what's it called?|- rock and roll. [00:10:25] (scorsese) Yes. exactly. [00:10:27] Whoa. [00:10:29] ( ''mannish Boy'') [00:10:33] When l was a young boy [00:10:37] At the age of five [00:10:40] my mother said l would be [00:10:44] the greatest man alive [00:10:48] but now l'm a man [00:10:51] Way past 21 [00:10:55] l want you to believe me, woman [00:10:59] l have lots of fun [00:11:02] l'm a man [00:11:06] l spell ''m'' [00:11:10] ''A'', chile [00:11:14] ''n'' [00:11:18] my grandma says l'm grown [00:11:22] no ''b'' [00:11:26] ''o'', chile [00:11:30] ''Y'' [00:11:34] that mean mannish boy [00:11:37] man [00:11:41] l'm a full-grown man [00:11:45] man [00:11:49] l'm a natural-born lover's man [00:11:53] man [00:11:57] l'm a rolling stone [00:12:01] man [00:12:05] l'm a hoochie-coochie man [00:12:09] Well [00:12:12] Well, well, well [00:12:16] the line l shoot [00:12:20] l will never miss [00:12:24] When l make love to a girl [00:12:28] she can't resist [00:12:32] l think l'll go down [00:12:36] to old kansas stew [00:12:40] l'm gonna bring back my second cousin [00:12:44] that little johnny congeroo [00:12:48] All you little girls [00:12:52] sitting out at that line [00:12:55] l can make love to you, girl [00:12:59] ln five minutes' time [00:13:03] Ain't that a man? [00:13:07] l spell ''m'' [00:13:11] ''A'', chile [00:13:15] ''n'' [00:13:19] that represents man [00:13:23] no ''b'' [00:13:27] ''o'', chile [00:13:31] ''Y'' [00:13:35] that means mannish boy [00:13:39] man [00:13:42] l'm a full-grown man [00:13:46] man [00:13:50] l'm a natural-born lover's man [00:13:54] man [00:13:58] l'm a rolling stone [00:14:02] man-child [00:14:06] l'm a hoochie-coochie man [00:14:10] Well [00:14:14] Well, well, well, well, well, well, well [00:14:18] Well, well, well, well, well [00:14:41] (cheering) [00:14:43] (robertson)|Wasn't that a man. muddy Waters. [00:14:50] on the guitar, eric clapton. [00:14:52] (cheering) [00:15:02] one, two, a-one, two, three... [00:15:05] ( ''Further on up the road'') [00:16:20] further on up the road [00:16:23] someone's gonna hurt you|like you hurt me [00:16:26] further on up the road [00:16:30] someone's gonna hurt you|like you hurt me [00:16:33] further on up the road [00:16:36] baby, just you wait and see [00:16:39] You gotta reap just what you sow [00:16:42] that old saying is true [00:16:45] You gotta reap just what you sow [00:16:48] that old saying is true [00:16:52] just like you mistreat someone [00:16:54] someone's gonna mistreat you [00:17:53] further up the road [00:17:56] someone's gonna hurt you|like you hurt me [00:17:59] further on up the road [00:18:02] someone's gonna hurt you|like you hurt me [00:18:05] further on up the road [00:18:08] baby, just you wait and see [00:18:11] You been laughing, pretty baby [00:18:14] someday you're gonna be crying [00:18:17] You been laughing, pretty baby [00:18:21] someday you're gonna be crying [00:18:24] further on up the road [00:18:27] You'll find out l wasn't lying [00:19:33] (cheering) [00:19:49] ok. so, rick, what is shangri-la?|maybe you could give us a little tour. [00:19:53] What is shangri-la? [00:19:55] lt's a club house where we get together|and play. make records. [00:20:02] Yeah. [00:20:05] kind of better. lt's like an office, l guess. [00:20:09] lt used to be a bordello. [00:20:12] - A bordello?|- You can tell by the wallpaper. [00:20:15] that decadence,|that softness in the barroom. [00:20:18] l've heard a few funny stories, man. [00:20:22] - that's why all these rooms are here.|- You can't believe most of what you hear. [00:20:31] this was a master-control bedroom,|this is now a master-control music room. [00:20:37] let me ask you, now that the last|Waltz is over, what are you doing now? [00:20:45] - eddie, why don't you...|- ( ''sip the wine'' intro) [00:20:53] just making music, you know? [00:20:55] oh, yeah. [00:20:57] trying to stay busy, man. [00:21:05] (music grows żouder) [00:21:09] ż want to żay down beside you [00:21:20] ż want to hożd yourbody cżose to mine [00:21:31] like a grape that grows ripe... [00:21:36] lt's where the music took you. otherwise|you would never go to such a situation. [00:21:40] because of the music,|it took us everywhere. [00:21:45] lt took us to some strange places. [00:21:48] - (scorsese) physically and spiritually?|- physically, spiritually and psychotically. [00:21:57] lt just always wasn't on the stage. [00:22:00] - even though you were on the stage.|- even though we were on the stage. [00:22:07] ( ''Evangeżine'') [00:22:17] she stands on the banks|of the mighty mississippi [00:22:22] Alone in the pale moonlight [00:22:27] Waiting for a man, a riverboat gambler [00:22:32] said that he'd return tonight [00:22:39] they used to waltz on the banks|of the mighty mississippi [00:22:44] loving the whole night through [00:22:49] till the riverboat gambler|went off to make a killing [00:22:54] And bring it on back to you [00:23:01] evangeline, evangeline [00:23:07] curses the soul|of the mississippi Queen [00:23:11] that pulled her man away [00:23:31] bayou sam from south louisiana [00:23:35] had gambling in his veins [00:23:41] evangeline from the maritimes [00:23:45] Was slowly going insane [00:23:53] high on the top of hickory hill [00:23:57] she stands in the lightning and thunder [00:24:03] Down on the river the boat was sinking [00:24:07] she watched that Queen go under [00:24:15] evangeline, evangeline [00:24:20] curses the soul|of the mississippi Queen [00:24:25] that pulled her man away [00:24:32] evangeline, evangeline [00:24:37] curses the soul|of the mississippi Queen [00:24:42] that pulled her man away [00:25:27] ( ''chest Fever'') [00:26:29] (robertson) garth was one of the most|amazing musicians that we knew. [00:26:34] he could play better|than anybody we ever heard. [00:26:37] And garth joined the band [00:26:40] if we would make him the music teacher. [00:26:46] We didn't know why but we said|''sure. l mean, we're interested anyway.'' [00:26:52] And we had to pay him $10 a week each|for these music lessons. [00:26:58] then l was sure it was a riff. [00:27:01] but then l found out what it really was. [00:27:04] lt was that, where he was coming from|and his musical education, [00:27:08] to tell his parents at this point|that we was joining a rock-and-roll band [00:27:12] would have been like|pouring it down the drain. [00:27:14] so he justified it to his people and his|background by being a music teacher. [00:27:21] there is a view that jazz is evil [00:27:26] because it comes from evil people. [00:27:29] but, actually,|the greatest priests on 52nd street [00:27:36] and on the streets of new York city|were the musicians. [00:27:41] they were doing|the greatest healing work. [00:27:45] And they knew how|to punch through music [00:27:49] which would cure|and make people feel good. [00:27:54] ( ''ok?pheżia'') [00:28:05] boards on the window [00:28:08] mail by the door [00:28:10] Why would anybody leave|so quickly for? [00:28:14] ophelia [00:28:18] Where have you gone? [00:28:24] the old neighbourhood|just ain't the same [00:28:30] nobody knows just what became [00:28:33] of ophelia [00:28:38] Where have you gone? [00:28:45] Was it something that somebody said? [00:28:50] mama, you know we broke the rules [00:28:55] Was somebody up against the law? [00:29:00] honey, you know that l'd die for you [00:29:04] they got your number [00:29:07] they're scared and running [00:29:09] but l'm just waiting for|the second coming [00:29:13] of ophelia [00:29:17] please darken my door [00:29:44] Was it something that somebody said? [00:29:49] mama, you know we broke the rules [00:29:54] Was somebody up against the law? [00:29:59] oh, honey, you know that l'd die for you [00:30:04] Ashes of laughter [00:30:06] the ghost is clear [00:30:09] Why do the best things|always disappear? [00:30:12] like ophelia [00:30:16] oh, please, come back home [00:30:51] (cheering) [00:30:57] most of the show stuff, though,|was like travelling shows, like tent shows. [00:31:03] one was Walcott's rabbit foot minstrels. [00:31:07] - (scorsese) What was that?|- Walcott's rabbit foot minstrels. Yeah. [00:31:13] they used to have the show start, right? [00:31:18] they'd have the singers and the players|and the different parts of the show. [00:31:23] then the master of ceremonies|would come out just before the finale [00:31:26] and explain that, after the kids go home,|they'd have the midnight ramble. [00:31:33] - (scorsese) the midnight...?|- the midnight ramble. [00:31:36] the songs would get a little bit juicier|and the jokes'd get a little funnier. [00:31:41] And the prettiest dancer would really|get down and shake it a few times. [00:31:46] A lot of the rock-and-roll duck walks and|steps and moves came from a lot of that. [00:31:52] everybody did it and so, when you would|see elvis presley or jerry lee lewis [00:31:58] or chuck berry or bo Diddley|really shaking it up, [00:32:01] it didn't come out of nowhere,|lt didn't come out of the air. [00:32:04] lt was like the local entertainment|everybody was going to see. [00:32:08] so when they exposed it|to the rest of the world, [00:32:10] it was like this unknown beast|that had come out, [00:32:14] the grotesque of music|that the devil had sent, you know? [00:32:25] here we go. [00:32:27] ( ''caravan'') [00:32:29] And the caravan is on its way [00:32:34] l can hear the merry gypsies play [00:32:39] mama, mama, look at emma rose [00:32:45] she's a-playing with the radio [00:32:50] la la la-la la-la la [00:32:55] la la la-la la-la la [00:33:02] And the caravan|is painted red and white [00:33:07] that means everybody's|staying overnight [00:33:11] And the barefoot gypsy boy|round the campfire sing and play [00:33:17] And a woman tells us of her ways [00:33:22] la la la-la la-la la [00:33:28] la la la-la la-la la [00:33:32] Da da da-da da [00:33:34] turn up your radio [00:33:40] And let me, let me, let me hear the song [00:33:45] switch on your electric light [00:33:50] now we can get down|to what's really wrong [00:33:56] l long just to hold you in my arms [00:34:01] so that l can, l can feel you [00:34:07] sweet lady of the night [00:34:12] l shall reveal you [00:34:15] turn it up [00:34:17] turn it up [00:34:19] turn it up [00:34:20] little bit higher [00:34:21] radio [00:34:23] turn it up [00:34:24] that's enough [00:34:25] so you know it's got soul [00:34:28] la la la-la la-la la [00:34:34] la la la-la la-la la [00:34:41] turn up your radio [00:34:46] And let me, let me, let me,|let me hear the song [00:34:52] switch on your electric light [00:34:57] then we can get down to what's|really wrong, really wrong, really wrong [00:35:02] l long just to hold you in my arms [00:35:08] so that l can, l can feel you [00:35:14] sweet lady of the night [00:35:19] l shall reveal you [00:35:22] turn it up [00:35:24] turn it up [00:35:26] turn it up [00:35:27] little bit higher [00:35:28] radio [00:35:30] turn it up [00:35:31] that's enough [00:35:32] so you know [00:35:34] lt's got soul [00:35:36] so you know [00:35:40] so you know it's got [00:35:42] soul, baby [00:35:51] so you know it's got [00:35:53] Yeah [00:35:57] Zi boo ba boogie,|zi boo ba boogie, zi boo ba boogie [00:36:02] so you know it's got soul [00:36:08] so you know it's got nothin' but soul [00:36:13] turn it up now [00:36:16] Yeah, yeah, yeah [00:36:19] one more time [00:36:25] Do that one more time [00:36:28] so you know [00:36:33] Do that one more time [00:36:39] Do that one more time [00:36:42] one more [00:36:45] Do that one more time [00:36:51] Do that one more time [00:36:53] thank you. [00:37:08] hey, Van the man. [00:37:10] (cheering) [00:37:16] lawrence ferlinghetti. [00:37:18] (cheering) [00:37:34] let us pray. [00:37:37] our father, whose art's in heaven [00:37:42] hollow by thy name -|unless things change. [00:37:48] thy wigdom come and gone.
