Previously on ''Stargate SG-1'';
You can't take down the entire NlD,[br]and they'll kill you for trying.
You might be able to hold the evidence[br]over them and get Hammond reinstated.
- l'm not leavin' till l get what l came for.[br]- And what are you going to do?
Well, l was thinking about shootin' ya.
Kinsey's online activities connect him to[br]NlD actions over the last year and a half.
Hell, you've been back in time,[br]forward in time. You've seen it all.
l just wonder how things turn out.
l wonder how far you'd go to stop me[br]becoming president of the United States.
Senator's been hit
The assassination of Senator Kinsey has[br]sent shock waves through Washington.
With his party's convention[br]just weeks away,
the senator was considered[br]their most likely choice
for second spot on the presidential ticket.
Hey l'm back.
What'd l miss?
Sir, Senator Kinsey is dead. He was shot.
- What?[br]- lt's been all over the news for three days.
- l've been on vacation.[br]- lt looks like a professional hit.
The shooter fired from a hotel room[br]across the street and then disappeared.
- Any suspects?[br]- Police aren't saying anything.
One can assume that a man in Senator[br]Kinsey's position will have many enemies.
l'm sorry, but these men are here[br]to escort you to Peterson.
You'll be flown to Andrews and turned[br]over to the authorities in Washington.
Sir, what is this?
Colonel O'Neill is under arrest[br]for the murder of Senator Kinsey.
- You'll have to come with us, sir.[br]- l don't think so.
- Colonel...[br]- General, l've been on vacation.
l believe you, Jack, but for the moment[br]we're going to have to cooperate.
- There's no way Colonel O'Neill did this.[br]- Yes, Major, but my hands are tied.
How could they think he did it?[br]He wasn't in Washington.
Actually, it looks like he was.
Major Davis is acting as liaison between[br]the Pentagon and the district attorney.
- He has a report for us. Major?[br]- Thank you, sir.
This is from a security camera in a hotel[br]across the street from the shooting,
just a couple of minutes after it happened.
The trajectory of the bullet indicates that[br]the shot did in fact come from this hotel.
- That doesn't prove anything.[br]- Based on this,
the FBl searched the colonel's house[br]and his cabin. They didn't find anything.
But a neighbour said they saw Colonel[br]O'Neill dumping something by the lake.
They sent down a diver,[br]who came up with this.
Ballistics match it with the bullet[br]that killed Senator Kinsey.
l don't know what to say, sir. lt's no secret[br]there was bad blood between them.
Come on. They had a few run-ins.[br]That's hardly a motive for murder.
l've read the file on Kinsey,[br]but it is a little vague.
The senator was involved with individuals
who were unhappy with the way[br]Stargate Command was being run.
They tried to force[br]General Hammond to resign.
Colonel O'Neill connected[br]Kinsey to their illegal activities
and threatened to go public[br]unless he got them to back off.
So, technically,[br]Kinsey was protecting the SGC.
True, but he wasn't happy about it.
But that's not a motive to kill him.[br]lt's a motive to keep him alive.
Unfortunately, we can divulge none of[br]this information to the civilian authorities.
Senator Kinsey was shot[br]in broad daylight on a public street,
in front of civilian witnesses.
lf we tried to shift this to a military court,
it would be a disaster[br]for the current administration.
With respect, the current administration[br]owes a lot to the colonel.
l'm aware of that, Major,[br]as is the president.
Unfortunately, there's nothing[br]he can do for Colonel O'Neill at this time.
On the other hand, l'm not a politician,
which is why l'm suspending[br]SG-1's offworld duties
and assigning you[br]to get to the bottom of this.
The full resources of this command[br]are at your disposal.
- Thank you, sir.[br]- Dismissed.
How are you doin'?
l'm accused of a murder l didn't commit.[br]How do you think l'm doin'?
When are you being[br]transferred to Washington?
Couple of days.
General Hammond has suspended[br]our offworld duties
in order that we may[br]investigate this situation further.
Unfortunately, it's not going very well.
There is evidence that places you[br]at the scene of the shooting.
l was fishing.
Look, Kinsey wasn't exactly[br]my best buddy,
and on occasion l felt like[br]beating the crap out of him,
but l didn't kill him.
They somehow have a video
that clearly places you[br]in Washington DC three days ago.
l don't believe this.
We know you've been[br]on secret missions before.
l wasn't on a mission, Jonas.[br]l was in Minnesota, on vacation.
Did you encounter anyone[br]that can verify your story?
l was 20 miles away[br]from the closest town, alone.
That was the point.
Perhaps this is all[br]part of an elaborate plan.
Those responsible chose to act at a time[br]when they knew you would have no alibi.
l checked the video to see if it had been[br]doctored, but it appears to be genuine.
So either that really is Colonel O'Neill[br]or someone who looks exactly like him.
We have encountered[br]duplicating technology before.
l was thinking the same thing, but those[br]mimic devices are under heavy guard.
Someone wanna fill me in?
Three years ago, we had[br]a foothold situation here at the SGC.
Aliens gained control[br]by using mimic devices
to impersonate and then replace[br]base personnel, including myself.
- Why haven't l heard this before?[br]- Given the seriousness of the breach,
a decision was made to erase all mention[br]of the incident from official records.
- Where are these devices now?[br]- Area 51 .
- How many do you have?[br]- We recovered 12 from the SGC.
They're all stored here.
- Has anyone studied them recently?[br]- We've all been focusing on the X-303.
There we go.[br]All present and accounted for.
lt's a fake.
All the mimic devices were switched.
Someone duplicated the duplicators?
The last test was six months ago. lt could[br]have been taken any time after that.
There has got to be some way[br]that we can use this to clear you.
l don't think the alien-technology[br]defence is gonna fly.
lf l understand this,[br]there is someone out there
that can make himself look exactly[br]like you. That's gotta be relevant.
lt's classified information, Jonas.
But we can use it to find[br]the real assassin... maybe.
- So how do these things work?[br]- lt's a two-part process.
First, you pass a person[br]through a scanning device,
which uploads their image[br]into a holographic sequencer.
- Which looks like this.[br]- Exactly.
Then you place that sequencer[br]on your body
and you instantly take on[br]the appearance of the person scanned.
- Was the scanning device taken?[br]- No, it's still at Area 51 . We checked it.
So they can only impersonate[br]a limited number of people.
12, to be precise, including[br]Colonel O'Neill, Dr Fraiser and Daniel.
What about General Hammond?
The alien impersonating him[br]was trapped with several others.
They activated some kind of self-destruct[br]and blew themselves up.
ln case you're wondering,[br]Teal'c and l were never scanned.
That's good to know.
l've requested all the personnel files on[br]those who had access to these devices.
l'd like the two of you to check them out.
- What about you?[br]- l'm going to Washington.
l need to look up an old acquaintance.
Major Carter.[br]l'm here to see Agent Barrett.
Major Carter. l was wondering[br]how long it would be before you came by.
Welcome to NlD headquarters.
Only eight people at Area 51 have had[br]authorised access to the mimic devices.
- We must speak to them all.[br]- Most have moved to the X-303 project,
so they're still living in Nevada.
Wait a minute. There's something.
Dr Brent Langham.
Killed in an automobile accident[br]three weeks ago.
Given the circumstance, that would seem[br]to be a highly unlikely coincidence.
What exactly are you[br]implying here, Major?
That the NlD had a hand[br]in the assassination of a US senator?
Very few organisations have the[br]resources to pull off something like this.
And the man accused[br]happens to belong to one of them.
The SGC is not behind this.
Senator Kinsey was no friend[br]of the Stargate Command.
He tried to take you down more than once.
We don't engage in criminal activity,[br]Agent Barrett, unlike the NlD.
The Prometheus incident was[br]orchestrated by a handful of rogue agents.
What about Steveston, Oregon?[br]You sat by and watched
while the Goa'uld took over[br]an entire town of civilians.
That was an officially[br]sanctioned operation.
lt would've succeeded if it wasn't for you.
Are you kidding me?[br]Your agents were compromised
and your organisation[br]was about to be infiltrated.
The videotape of Colonel O'Neill clearly[br]places him at the scene of the crime,
and the murder weapon[br]was found near his cabin.
So, if you'll excuse me...
l've got work to do.
lt says here that by 2075
the Earth's oceans will be too warm[br]to sustain most coral reefs
and, once they're gone, the ecosystem[br]of the planet will collapse.
That's a cheerful thought.
We spend all of our time trying[br]to protect the world from the Goa'uld.
Maybe we should worry a little more[br]about protecting it from ourselves.
What are we doing out here,[br]Agent Barrett?
My office is bugged.
lt's standard procedure to record[br]all conversations in NlD headquarters.
What l'm about to say, Major, nobody else[br]can know, especially my superiors.
What are you talking about?
There's a cancer at the NlD, a shadow[br]organisation that operates outside the law.
- lt's time they were exposed.[br]- l agree.
The Prometheus incident[br]was the last straw.
l was called to the White House[br]for an assignment.
What does this have to do[br]with Colonel O'Neill?
Senator Kinsey was working for me.
He was about to give me enough evidence[br]to bring down the leadership of the group.
How did you convince him to do that?
l know about a few of the skeletons[br]in the senator's closet.
- And it is an election year.[br]- You blackmailed him.
l'll do whatever it takes[br]to bring these people down, Major.
Who else knows about this?
As of this moment, the president,[br]a few members of his staff, and you.
- You're working alone?[br]- The smaller the operation, the better.
You have no idea how far the corruption[br]goes. The SGC isn't immune.
You're taking a big risk talking to me.
l need your help.[br]And you haven't told me everything.
What makes you so sure[br]that Colonel O'Neill is innocent?
When you work with someone[br]that long, you know.
There's something more than that.[br]There's something you're not telling me.
Your job requires you to be suspicious[br]of everybody, even your co-workers.
Where l'm from, we trust each other[br]with our lives every day.
Maybe that's something[br]you can't understand.
l guess it's never too late to learn.
When the mimic devices were found, eight[br]scientists were assigned to study them.
The Pentagon hoped to adapt[br]the devices for use in the field.
However, while the holographic images[br]created by the aliens lasted indefinitely,
those created in the lab only lasted[br]for three to four minutes at a time,
due to problems with[br]electromagnetic interference.
So the project was scaled back, and five[br]of the team members were reassigned.
The remaining three were[br]Dr Singh, Dr Healey,
and this fellow - Dr Brent Langham.
They continued working for six months[br]with no breakthroughs.
Finally, the project was shut down.
Dr Healey and Dr Singh[br]were transferred to the X-303 project.
And Dr Langham?
He was supposedly killed in a car crash[br]two days before the transfer was due.
The body was burned.[br]He was identified through dental records.
But the coroner missed something.[br]Toxicology report came back clean.
No signs of any drugs or alcohol[br]in the victim's blood.
- Why is that unusual?[br]- Dr Langham was epileptic.
His condition required regular doses[br]of anticonvulsant drugs.
There should have been[br]traces of those drugs.
The dental records were falsified.
The body recovered[br]at the crash site was someone else.
So you're saying this Dr Langham[br]took the mimic device
- and engineered his own disappearance.[br]- Or someone engineered it for him.
Are we suggesting, then,[br]that this scientist shot Kinsey?
l doubt it. He had[br]no paramilitary training.
Perhaps Dr Langham merely[br]provided the mimic devices for a fee.
But he can lead us[br]to whoever was responsible.
l don't care what it takes.[br]l want you to find this Dr Langham.
OK, what is this?
The rifle used to kill Senator Kinsey was[br]not one you pick up at your local store.
This is a one-stop shop[br]for unregistered weapons.
High-end goods, professional clientele.[br]There's a chance our shooter was here.
Why don't you shut them down?
l let them operate[br]in exchange for information.
Sometimes you gotta cross the line.[br]You just gotta know when to step back.
- Hey, Leo.[br]- Leo.
Agent Barrett. When are you gonna[br]get yourself a new suit?
- Black is good for any occasion.[br]- lt's also thinning.
Who's your friend?
Major Samantha Carter,[br]United States Air Force.
We can talk in front of her.
What can l do for you?
We wanna know about a 700[br]with a customised breakdown stock.
Yeah. l moved one last week.
ln all likelihood, the weapon you sold[br]was used to assassinate a US senator.
What's your point?
Was the buyer a regular customer?
No, l never seen him before.
- ls that the guy?[br]- That's the guy.
Did he look at any other weapons[br]besides the 700?
As a matter of fact, he did.
A sound-suppressed revolver rifle.
- Did he handle it?[br]- Sure.
- Was he wearing gloves?[br]- No.
- Has anybody handled it since?[br]- No, just Leo here.
There's one full set of prints[br]and one partial,
but neither of them match Colonel O'Neill.
lt's a little strange.
Assuming the full set matches Leo,
that would mean the partial[br]belongs to the shooter.
- Maybe.[br]- lt's the best lead we have.
The shooter probably[br]won't have a criminal record.
ln fact, there's a good chance[br]he may not exist on any database at all.
Except maybe NlD personnel files.
You said it yourself, Agent Barrett -[br]there's a cancer in your organisation.
Kinsey was gonna bring them down,[br]so they had him killed.
So did they hire an outside contractor[br]or use one of their own?
Give me the disk.
l'll check the files[br]and call you in a couple of hours.
Good call, checking for a second weapon.
- Thanks.[br]- You're welcome.
So where do we start?
lt is probable that Dr Langham[br]has assumed a new identity.
New name, new address,[br]new social security number.
Can't change his medical condition.
Do not many thousands of people[br]suffer from this affliction?
Yes, but there's a wide[br]range of treatments.
Dr Langham was on specific drugs,[br]including primidone and carbamazepine.
So... we can access[br]the national pharmaceutical database
and focus on new prescriptions[br]written in the past three weeks.
We cross-reference that[br]with age and gender,
and we should be able[br]to narrow down the field.
- Have Teal'c and Jonas found anything?[br]- They have a lead on a missing scientist.
They think he may have[br]taken the mimic devices.
lf the shooter was NlD, we can track him[br]using the prints from the second rifle.
What about this Agent Barrett?[br]Are you sure you can trust him?
l think so.
You mustn't tell him about the foothold[br]incident. l shouldn't have even told Jonas.
l know, sir.[br]l'm hoping it won't come to that.
l'll keep you posted, sir.
- So?[br]- You were right.
The prints match[br]an NlD agent named Mark Devlin.
- How'd you learn to drive?[br]- Daniel Jackson instructed me.
- When was that?[br]- l believe the year was 1969.
- Can l help you?[br]- We're looking for a Mr David Zwydel.
- That's me. What's this about?[br]- Our apologies.
- You are not the man we are looking for.[br]- Sorry, l must have made a mistake.
Have a good day.
- That guy look familiar to you?[br]- He did not.
He looked familiar to me.
No, wait, wait, wait.
l know that guy.
When l first came to Stargate Command,[br]he was an airman in the gate room.
Dr Langham, l presume.
- You found Dr Langham.[br]- He's in a holding cell on level 16.
- Well done. Has he said anything?[br]- No, sir. But he did ask for a lawyer.
That could be a problem. We're not[br]following proper procedure here.
Sir, he stole top-secret material[br]and is an accessory to murder.
Dr Langham is also the only one that[br]can verify Colonel O'Neill's innocence.
Not necessarily. Major Carter[br]and Agent Barrett are pursuing a lead
that may take them to the real assassin.
- And if it doesn't?[br]- l know how you feel.
No one wants Colonel O'Neill back more[br]than l do, but this is a delicate situation.
l understand this man had some injuries[br]when you brought him in.
Dr Langham was reluctant[br]to accompany us back to the SGC.
- He required some convincing.[br]- All l'm saying is we have to be careful.
We're way outside our jurisdiction[br]and, like it or not, this man has rights.
He will volunteer the information.[br]Of that l am certain.
Look, this is a waste of time.[br]l got nothing to say.
OK, l took the mimic devices, but l didn't[br]know what they were planning to do.
What? You think l'm part of some kinda[br]murder conspiracy? Well, you're wrong.
All right, l'll tell you what l know,[br]but you have to promise me protection.
l'll get us in.
- What are you doing?[br]- Covering you.
Thank you. Get up.
When you switched the devices,[br]where'd you take them?
Washington. They wanted me[br]to take them myself,
because using a middleman[br]would be too risky.
- To whom are you referring?[br]- They call themselves the Committee.
They run the whole show.
We're going to need names.
This is conspiracy to commit murder.
l didn't know they'd use[br]the devices to kill anybody.
They told me they were gonna analyse the[br]technology for commercial applications.
Why would you believe that?
You don't think money[br]has anything to do with this?
ln six months, there have been at least[br]ten new patents traceable to Area 51 .
l'm talking industrial chemicals,[br]metallurgy, computers, you name it.
- So they're selling alien technology?[br]- No, they're buying it.
The members of the Committee aren't[br]secret agents, they're businessmen.
The rogue NlD agents work for them.
They got millions invested[br]and they expect to make billions
by incorporating alien advancements[br]into their product lines.
This was about protecting the planet.
Nobody said it had to be[br]a non-profit business.
Give us the names[br]and we'll ensure your safety.
Well, l'm gonna need a few more details.
You work for the air force.[br]You don't have witness protection.
But we do have the Stargate.
- What do you mean?[br]- lf these men are as powerful as you say,
there's probably nowhere[br]on Earth you'd be safe.
Fortunately, we have other options.
We need to talk.
Who else knows about[br]this operation at Stargate Command?
- We've got a leak, Major.[br]- Wait a minute.
Agent Devlin was waiting for us.[br]Somebody tipped him off.
Not necessarily. Think about it.
You used a computer[br]to access those personnel files.
Maybe somebody tracked you.
- (phone)[br]- Don't answer that.
- lt's General Hammond.[br]- lf they think we're dead, that's good.
You trust me, you trust my team.
Sir, what's happening?
Did he talk?
No, that's great news.
Yes, sir. Understood.
What is it?
We've got the names of those[br]responsible for the assassination.
- What's that supposed to mean?[br]- We have an inside source.
This assignment[br]came from the White House.
lf you don't tell me what l need to know,[br]l'm gonna have to make a phone call.
You're the one who's[br]always talking about trust.
The man who shot Kinsey[br]was using a piece of alien technology.
A device which creates[br]a flawless holographic disguise -
in this case, a duplicate image[br]of Colonel O'Neill.
lt was a perfect plan to[br]get rid of Kinsey and the colonel.
Wait a minute. Why have l never[br]heard about this technology before?
We encountered the devices during[br]a foothold situation. lt was a close one.
Kinsey wanted to shut down[br]the Stargate programme,
so it was covered up[br]by presidential order.
- Who's your source?[br]- A scientist at Area 51 .
- He smuggled the devices out.[br]- That's not enough.
They're onto us. lf we don't[br]move fast, they'll disappear.
We need more than one scientist[br]who made a deal for immunity.
That's all we have.
Senator Kinsey's not dead.[br]He's in a coma.
- We've got him under 24-hour guard.[br]- Why didn't you tell me?
Because we needed to keep[br]his condition a secret for his protection.
lf he recovers, he can provide us with the[br]information to bring these people down.
- So we were both keeping secrets.[br]- That's the way the game's played.
You've got a...
Anyway, the Pentagon's been informed.
They're sending a man to the hospital.
- Did l...?[br]- Close enough.
- Who are they sending?[br]- A liaison officer.
- Major Davis.[br]- Major Davis, yeah.
There are 12 alien devices capable[br]of mimicking specific individuals.
Major Davis was one of them.
- Sergeant.[br]- Major Davis.
- l've come to check on the senator.[br]- Yes, sir.
- Agent Devlin, how did it go?[br]- Kinsey's dead.
Are you sure? He was supposed[br]to be dead the first time.
He wasn't wearing a bulletproof vest[br]this time. So, yeah, l'm sure.
There were a few complications, though.
- What's goin' on?[br]- Fire alarm. We need to move him.
We must ask you to wait here, sir.
Why is that, Sergeant?
Secondary casualties[br]are not our concern.
Major Davis can answer for those as well.
We still have a loose end.[br]They have Dr Langham in custody.
That's not important. His accusations[br]will be a minor inconvenience for us.
l suggest we use the mimic devices[br]to eliminate another thorn in our side.
- Someone at the SGC?[br]- General Hammond.
Once he's gone, we can replace him[br]with someone more sympathetic to us.
lf they know about the devices,[br]they'll be prepared.
Devlin's right. Besides, now that[br]Kinsey's dead, we have other options.
l think it's time we sent someone[br]to talk to Hammond,
get him to reconsider[br]those retirement plans.
He doesn't seem like the type[br]to bow to pressure.
Well, then, we are going to[br]have to be very convincing.
Agent Devlin, l would like you[br]to pay General Hammond a visit.
lmpress upon him our concerns for[br]the safety and wellbeing of his family.
lf he still refuses to play ball?
Then kill him.
What is this?
General Hammond sends his regards.
Get your hands up. Come on, get 'em up.
The hologram lasted six and a half[br]minutes. That's a new record for us.
- You took a big risk.[br]- l knew you were listening.
What makes you think l was gonna come[br]in before they incriminated themselves?
When you work with someone,[br]you just know.
Ah, Colonel O'Neill.
Glad you could make it.
What do you want, Kinsey?
l thought we should have a little chat[br]before we meet the press.
Did you need to gloat a little?
Don't be that way, Jack.[br]You need this as much as l do.
You'll only get public vindication
if the two of us appear[br]on the 6 o'clock news shaking hands.
Yeah. l'm not sure it's worth it.
The American people don't want their[br]air-force officers to be assassins, Jack.
They want them to be heroes.
l'm gonna make you a hero.
First of all, l want to apologise[br]to you and to the American people
for the deception[br]surrounding my untimely demise.
lt was an unfortunate[br]but necessary final step
in my investigation[br]of certain antidemocratic forces
that had taken root[br]in several key government agencies.
The ringleaders of this conspiracy[br]have now been taken into custody.
Of course, taking a bullet was not part of[br]my original plan to bring these men down.
But the success of the operation was well[br]worth any personal sacrifice on my part.
And l want the American people[br]to know that, if elected,
l intend to bring that same determination
and zeal for justice[br]with me to the White House.
l would also like to thank Colonel[br]Jack O'Neill of the United States Air Force
for the vital role he played[br]in my investigation.
l can't go into details[br]for reasons of national security,
but l can assure you all
that any evidence pointing to the colonel[br]as my would-be assassin
was simply part of the operation.
Smile, Colonel.[br]You just won me the election.
